Choosing Activation Checkpoints That Predict Conversion

Activation checkpoints earn their place when they correlate with later conversion — not when they look impressive on a roadmap slide. Test candidate steps against a short historical window: do users who reach this point convert at a meaningfully higher rate?

Keep two or three checkpoints at most. More than that and the funnel becomes a checklist nobody trusts. Document why each checkpoint exists so a future teammate does not add “nice to have” steps that dilute the signal.

Revisit checkpoints after major onboarding redesigns. Self-serve products change shape; the activation map must change with them.
